One of our highest-reviewed NVMe SSDs is the cheapest it’s ever been-
The Seagate FireCuda 530 2 TB is one of the best NVMe SSDs you can buy right now, and it’s on sale at B&H at an aggressively low price of only $239. If you’re looking for an upgrade to speed up your game load times, look no further.
In our review of the FireCuda 530 last year, we said “it combines awesome performance with best-in-class reliability to take the SSD crown,” pretty much making it the top choice for premium memory storage. Aside from the lack of AES 256-bit encryption, the only downside was its steep price. The 2TB version of the drive retails from $400-460, so you can score this for almost half-off, which is an absolute steal and a whole easier to recommend.
It’s got a 7,300MB/s read and 6,900MB/s write speed. As for performance, it’s at the…
Spaceship roguelite Jumplight Odyssey is an anime-fueled FTL-
In a new trailer that premiered during the PC Gaming Show 2023, we got our first glimpse of Jumplight Odyssey’s combat. The upcoming roguelite spaceship colony sim was revealed last year in a fittingly rambunctious story trailer, but, as the new trailer reveals, it’s not just buck-toothed pigs and accidental fire hazards you’ll be dealing with as you lead a crew on a voyage through the stars.
It looks like you’ll spend a lot of time fending off invading Zutopan fleets (led by the wonderfully and theatrically named Admiral Voltan) and preparing various defenses. Blast doors must be initiated, gangways locked, and crew members ordered to (literally) spin into their combat uniforms before operating defensive turrets. Starfighters nee…
Samsung’s new microLED TVs are five million times faster than your gaming monitor-
You know how OLED panels make LCD monitors look like slugs when it comes to response times? Well, you might want to sit down. Because Samsung’s new microLED TV is 500,000 times faster than its latest OLED panels.
Specifically, Samsung says its new MicroLED CX panels, just announced at CES, are good for 2 nanosecond response times. That compares with the 0.1ms pixel response the Dell Alienware 34 OLED is rated at, which of course uses a Samsung Quantum Dot OLED panel.
If nanosecond sounds like the natural progression from millisecond, it’s worth remembering how big a gap there is between the two metrics. Milliseconds are of course one thousandth of a second. Nanoseconds? That’ll be one billionth of a second. All of which means that this Samsung micoLED panel is five million t…
The Max Payne remake is likely years away, but one ambitious modder cranked out an ‘RTX on’ remaster of the original game’s first level-
Ray traced lighting, man. I often feel like I can do without its beastly hits to performance in my games, but then I’ll see a transformative use of it that makes me want to slam that “RTX on” button. Modder Slasks Psybunker’s demo for ray tracing in the original Max Payne (first spotted by DSOGaming) is one such dinger.
Slasks Psybunker seems to have used the RTX Remix runtime to use this, an earlier version of the RTX remastering toolkit Nvidia plans to release at the end of the month. As a refresher to those who aren’t fully tuned in with bleeding edge Nvidia graphics stuff, RTX Remix is the tech giant’s tool for quickly creating ray tracing-enabled “remasters” of older PC games. The company first showed it off with a ray tracing-enabled version of Portal.
The results are …
Elden Ring’s developers know most players use guides, but still try to cater to those who go in blind- ‘If they can’t do it, then there’s some room for improvement on our behalf’-
Raise your hand if you’ve played through a FromSoftware game without using a guide. If your hand’s up, you’re a rare and impressive bird, clearly suited to a life of luxury in some billionaire’s menagerie. I can’t think of a developer I associate more heavily with online guides and wikis than FromSoftware. While it’s certainly possible to beat their games without outside help, I think the vast majority of players look up weapons, NPC questlines, boss strategies, even basic item descriptions to better piece together what the heck is going on in Dark Souls or Elden Ring.
Who’s related to who? Who betrayed who? Whose magic and hubris destroyed the world? To the internet!
I always assumed FromSoftware knew good and well that its players turn to wikis and multi-hou…
This fan tribute to Lance Reddick as Destiny’s Commander Zavala is going to make me well up-
I’ve spent more thousands of hours playing the Destiny games than I care to admit, so the loss of Lance Reddick last week, at the far too young age of 60, hit particularly hard. As the voice of Commander Zavala since day one, Reddick has stoically accompanied us on missions across the solar system, providing fatherly encouragement as we batted away one paracausal threat to humanity after another.
Another actor might have turned in a rote performance as a patrician leader and called it done, but in his nine years on the series Reddick nailed the character’s struggles with guilt and the burden of responsibility. Where Zavala could have been a cloying, one-note character, thanks in large part to Reddick he landed as a believable voice for hope in a universe beset by perm…
