The Max Payne remake is likely years away, but one ambitious modder cranked out an ‘RTX on’ remaster of the original game’s first level-

Ray traced lighting, man. I often feel like I can do without its beastly hits to performance in my games, but then I’ll see a transformative use of it that makes me want to slam that “RTX on” button. Modder Slasks Psybunker’s demo for ray tracing in the original Max Payne (first spotted by DSOGaming) is one such dinger.

Slasks Psybunker seems to have used the RTX Remix runtime to use this, an earlier version of the RTX remastering toolkit Nvidia plans to release at the end of the month. As a refresher to those who aren’t fully tuned in with bleeding edge Nvidia graphics stuff, RTX Remix is the tech giant’s tool for quickly creating ray tracing-enabled “remasters” of older PC games. The company first showed it off with a ray tracing-enabled version of Portal.

The results are …

Elden Ring’s developers know most players use guides, but still try to cater to those who go in blind- ‘If they can’t do it, then there’s some room for improvement on our behalf’-

Raise your hand if you’ve played through a FromSoftware game without using a guide. If your hand’s up, you’re a rare and impressive bird, clearly suited to a life of luxury in some billionaire’s menagerie. I can’t think of a developer I associate more heavily with online guides and wikis than FromSoftware. While it’s certainly possible to beat their games without outside help, I think the vast majority of players look up weapons, NPC questlines, boss strategies, even basic item descriptions to better piece together what the heck is going on in Dark Souls or Elden Ring.

Who’s related to who? Who betrayed who? Whose magic and hubris destroyed the world? To the internet!

I always assumed FromSoftware knew good and well that its players turn to wikis and multi-hou…

This fan tribute to Lance Reddick as Destiny’s Commander Zavala is going to make me well up-

I’ve spent more thousands of hours playing the Destiny games than I care to admit, so the loss of Lance Reddick last week, at the far too young age of 60, hit particularly hard. As the voice of Commander Zavala since day one, Reddick has stoically accompanied us on missions across the solar system, providing fatherly encouragement as we batted away one paracausal threat to humanity after another.

Another actor might have turned in a rote performance as a patrician leader and called it done, but in his nine years on the series Reddick nailed the character’s struggles with guilt and the burden of responsibility. Where Zavala could have been a cloying, one-note character, thanks in large part to Reddick he landed as a believable voice for hope in a universe beset by perm…

Securing the first letter of today’s Wordle answer early on certainly helped, but the biggest clues I had came from the letters I’d ruled out, rather than the few that remained. That turned out to be a satisfying game of Wordle, if a little worrying towards the end.

Want to play Warzone 2’s new ranked mode- You’d better meet the level requirement-

Call of Duty’s big Season 3 Reloaded update hits today, bringing with it new maps, missions, and crucially, a new ranked play mode for Warzone 2. While the ordinary Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer has had ranked play for ages, Call of Duty’s battle royale offering has yet to let you compete in a fashion that tells you how bad you are at it in a 100% scientifically accurate numerical way. Well, no more.

Hold your horses, though, because a tweet from Call of Duty’s anticheat team informs us that Warzone 2’s ranked play mode has a few villainy-deterring bells and whistles. There’s new server-side cheat detection gadgets, a toughened password reset policy and, most interesting of all, a higher level requirement than MW2’s ranked mode. You’ll need to be level 45 or above before you can jo…

Withers wasn’t joking—ruining the vibe in Baldur’s Gate 3’s new epilogue is punishable by death-

A little while before the fifth Patch of Baldur’s Gate 3 came along, I wrote up this news post about a teaser image Larian Studios had shared on Twitter, featuring Withers in a silly little hat warning “fun is mandatory”.

I joked about being scared at the time. Little did I know, I was very right to be. If you rain on Withers’ carefully constructed parade, his cosmic wrath is mighty. This was actually brought to my attention by camilams on the Baldur’s Gate 3 subreddit, but I figured I’d boot up my save to test it myself. (Sorry, Volo. You were the only person I could bring myself to harm.)

What pushes Withers over the edge is actually murdering one of the guests. I ran around, blew up some furniture, stabbed people, and even got into a scrap with my old par…

Modder accuses Take-Two of hypocrisy after lawyers obliterate all trace of their GTA 5 AI mod- ‘Rather than chasing small mods, perhaps they should focus on creating proper remakes with better pricing’-

Take-Two has chalked up another body in the GTA modding scene, and barely a week after Rockstar turned heads by buying up the FiveM mod makers. This time the victim was the creator of Sentient Streets, the AI mod that allowed you to chat with, cajole and extort the NPCs of Los Santos that we covered last week. Rockstar’s parent company was none too happy with it, apparently, so all trace of it has now been blasted from the internet.

Both the Nexus Mods page for Sentient Streets and a YouTube video showing it off have been unceremoniously scrubbed out of existence following takedowns by Take-Two. The mod’s creator, Bloc, took down the version of the mod hosted on GTA 5 Mods themself, for fear of that one eventually getting dinged by a DMCA as well. Bloc says the whole thing came co…

Redfall’s PC system requirements revealed, but they’re lacking a pretty big detail-

Arkane’s anti-vampire shooter Redfall won’t be out until next week, but the launch trailer is out today, showcasing plenty of action in a vampire-infested town and a clever Easter egg that old-time immersive sim fans will certainly enjoy.

Before that, however, we’ve got the official PC system requirements. They don’t seem too brutal, although that 100GB storage requirement is stiff, especially if you’re still rocking a small SSD. Maybe the most notable thing is that there’s no indication of what players can expect from each specification tier.

The omission is particularly glaring in light of the recent revelation that the Xbox version of Redfall will be limited to 30 fps. It’s also worth noting that the specs for Arkane’s previous game, Deathloop, did provide specific …
